Queer Alliance aims to improve the lives of LGBT people in Nigeria through advocacy, leadership development, media and research/documentation.
In Nigeria same-sex activity is illegal. The maximum punishment in the northern states is death by stoning. In the south the maximum punishment is 14 years in jail. Legislation is pending to criminalize same-sex marriage throughout the country.
With the Information for Transformation project Queer Alliance wants to empower the LGBT community in Delta State in Nigeria. The project wants to reach 300 LGBTs and inform them about human rights and establish a task force for LGBT human rights violation monitoring and documentation in Delta State. Part of the project will be to develop material to educate about and promote the rights of LGBTs in Delta State and Nigeria.
With PlanetRomeo Foundation funding, Queer Alliance wants to instruct human rights educators during a three day training session. These educators will be part of the task force that monitors and documents human rights violations. They will also reach out to 300 LGBT’s and share their information with them during multiple literacy sessions.
