NEXUS Youth Network, is a youth organization that focuses on the empowerment of the LGBTI community in Semarang, Indonesia.
NEXUS identified that, because of lack of space and opportunity, no communal activities were being undertaken by LGBTI people in Semarang. Also, most LGBTIs are still in the closet, which makes them hesitant to be involved in ‘LGBTI’-labeled activities.
With our funding, NEXUS established the Bhinneka Badminton Club. This club also serves as a safe space, which enables the community to gather and embrace their sexual orientation in a positive way.
… I learned many things from this activity. Not only that I can play badminton with fellow LGBTI people but I learned how to run an organization, a movement on equality. Even though the situation is difficult for our people in this country, a small yet meaningful step is made and I’m proud to be a part of that change…”.

Project results
- The Bhinneka Badminton Club was established;
- The kick-start event was the Bhinneka Cup Badminton Tournament, in which 36 GBTI men participated;
- Weekly trainings are organized;
- Two capacity building trainings were held on topics such as organizational skills, governance, fundraising and project management.
According to NEXUS, this project became an example for fellow LGBTI organizations in Semarang, on how to create a simple, yet impactful project for the community.
