Association for the promotion of Women (AVAF) is dedicated to strengthen and empower the lesbian community in the city of Yaoundé.
In Cameroon’s society, women are seen as inferior to men. This belief is not limited to the heterosexual part of the society: even within LGBT organizations lesbian women face discrimination. AVAF educates lesbian women on their rights. In 10 monthly meetings, consisting of human rights training and sports activities, they aimed to turn this vulnerable group into a solid and well-informed community.
Project results
AVAF reached out to over 330 lesbian women by organizing:
- educational talks;
- soccer games;
- a film screening on the theme of homophobia;
- a conference and gala event during the week of IDAHOT;
- training in the manufacturing of yoghurt and cakes.
